Vin Rock of Naughty by Nature Interview - 2020

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

DJ Kevin and KDUB sat down with Vin Rock from Naughty by Nature to talk to him about his music as an artist and producer, his projects, and upcoming plans for the next year.

All right, all right, all right then, rock. What's going on? Man? Ain't nothing, man, I'm here. Well, I'm broadcasting live from njinkshop, you know, in West Long Branch, New Jersey. That's where we do all of our merchandise. I see you out there wrapping. Would have blamed out nor the yeah, you know, this is Crimis, but I'm doing is. I'm really recovering from my fifty of birthday party weekend. Over the weekend. It was bananas, man, May sappy. Yeah, I had a lot going on, tons of like a man. Oh my goodness, I'm detoxin right now. Oh, yeah, we saw those videos that don posted. Yeah, it's Hilarious, man, we thought you asked out, you know. Like I said, that's the way you do it, though, right, turning fifty only one time. That's what half a century half, man, oh my goodness, and may belated birth day it over. Nah, I mean, I'm a few months, I'm a few I'm a few years away. That's half a century, but not. But it's it's really a blessed and especially you know, hey, everyone, no matter what you know, everyone doesn't get to make fifty years old. You know what I'm saying? Let alone years. Every day is a blessing, especially at this age. Yep, and as soon as it's safe to get on plane. Fifty part two, exactly, exactly. Oh, you know how we do, man. We've been blasted for life. So we get it in all over the world, man, planes, trains, boats and automobiles. So No, yeah, what former transportation? We got to make it happen. We'll get that somehow. Yes, sir, grateful to be around when you like you're excited. Jurassic Park location back there. I don't see the trees and the wilderness behind you. Oh Yeah, I'm in the backyard now. He's Nice. Looks Nice and Serene. Back then.

Oh yeah, it's really quiet until people want to drag race on the road. Yeah, been still we were. We were sitting back and we start thinking about some of the memories with Naughty by nature in the times we've been, you know, as fans, hanging out and stuff like that. And you know this is a new kids, new kids on the block radio show. So I said, wait a minute, let me take it back to Radio City Music Hall Real Quick. Yeah, I was there two, three nights and I was probably like you on your birthday weekend. I still can't remember, but I'Mna tell you what. When you guys came out bananas crazy, the whole crowd. I mean it, you know, everybody if a new kids, yeah, naughty by nature. event. Everybody kg tread yo the whole place with crazy. The roof was gonna blow. So tell us a little bit about you know that the New York City and that that was a crazy surprise. Man. First and foremost, you know we've known new kids on the block, Mark Wahlberg, since the early s and we did a show in London with them years ago. It was new kids on the block, but Marky mark was with them and really mark and tretching myself linked up first before we linked up with Donnie. So Marquis mark and trench were running and I remember mark getting with me. He was like, you know, of then you got a bit of multi bulk and master you man, you need to work out. You know what I'm saying, the boke up, you know, you get some energy bars or whatever. So that was like an early s and fast forward Mark Donnie. You know, they fired up the band and they did Radio City Music Hall and they called out quite a few artists to come out and Collab with them. I know they called out backstreet boys and he called us out because at the time they had a song with you know, hey Ho in the chorus. So donnie,...

...being the genius musical genius he is, he's like, you know what, it would be dope, since we're in the New York area and Radio City Music Hall, to call out Nordy by nature when we do that song with a Hayo in a chorus. So he reached out to us. We came through, and then me being the marketing genius and the merchandise and genius, this is why we rocked out with Donnie soon as he made that call and we were like, Oh, I bet new kids on the block, noughty by nature. I was already into the merchandise. So I told my merch guys. I'm like, you know what, let's take the naughty in the noughty front from our logo and use their kids on the block and let's make some naughty kids on the block t shirts and we're going to show up in surprise them with naughty kids on the block t shirts. So that's exactly what we did and soon as we showed up and showed that the Donnie. He was like, oh my goodness, what's up, and he gave it to the rest of the crew and then when we did that performance, they came out with the naughty kids on the block t shirts. We rocked out at Radio City music, all with hip hop array and man, we've been rocking out with this naughty kids on the block movement ever since. So shout the new kids on the block, shout the Donnie Wahlberg, shout to the whole BH Nation, all the block heads out there for just inviting us into your world. You know what I mean. You haven't hanced it, enhanced? Yep, totally enhanced it. It's like my two worlds collide. All right, right, because I'm into pop music, but I'm also in the pop right, right, and you know what, at the end of the day, man, music is music. You know, if you love music and you understand music, whether it's country, it could be reggie could be Indian music, you know, you feel those vibes and music is about vibe.

So, no matter what you're into, you could, like you say, you could definitely follow certain genres, but music is light and music is just a human expression and if you're human, it's virtually impossible not to feel any kind of music, you know what I'm saying. So for Norty by nature and new kids on the block, although we're hiphop and their pop, and as a matter of fact, norty by nature is POPs, we crossed over what our first saw. OPP It's just like a match made in heaven, man. So, you know, real recognized real feel good music recognizes feel good music and it was just a perfect combination. Exactly speaking, I feel good music. This brings this for actually brings a memory up and it wasn't a question, but this made the song pop into my head. What was it? Light, working with three lw for feels good right, Um, feels good right with with Um new kids on I mean with three on w. So at the time, you know kg, it's because the Baticle from our group and trench and I had to go it alone for a second. So we had signed the TVT records and we created an album called icons, and through creating that music without kg and creating that album, we came across this song. The producer was all star and when he played that track it just kind of felt good. You know, feels good and at the time three on w was rocking and we were like who would be a good collab to do this with? And although there was a bit of an age gap, we had a connection with them because the Tory Norton, she's actually from our hometown, to be starns in New Jersey. So her brother grew up with us, our brother, Ezra Norton, and we realize that she was in three I'll w. We like, you know what, that would make...

...sense because she's from Ltown and they're young, but they're just about the break into adulthood and young womanhood, so this would take them over the top. So, you know, we reached down, we made it happen and the Tory always says that back then, once we made the collaboration official, she was jumping up and down on the bed. Yeah, yeah, well down, and she was so excited, you know, to do that song with us. And I'm for truly. Back then nator was going through a lot internally with the group, so there was a lot of drama going on. She was the odd girl loud. She felt that because she was dark skinned they never really paid attention to her. So, you know, it was it was good to collaborate with us and to support her and just get her over that Hump. And now you see not only that, you know, not Tory has gone on. She's on power. You know, fifty cent show. She's an incredible actress right now. Adrian Bylon, she's doing the real right now and she's big and you know that journalism hosting world. And Keiley, you know, she took another route. She settled down, she had married and has a child and everything. So all three of those young ladies, you know, grew up to be very productive and this still doing what they want to do. So big shout the three on w we need a classic record. Call feels good and it's still going in the clubs right now. And there was also another one. It was all like it was on that Christmas album. Oh yeah, yeah, and they collaborated with trench again on a Christmas album. Yeah, tretch rum doing that song. I didn't participate on that song, but yeah, we got it in with three on w and over the home girls, Oh dysons and the best. Oh...

...yeah, and you never know, it's still not too late for reunions. Or I know right, but you know, you know how girls get there, like you know what? Yeah, we're past that and we're doing our own thing. But you know what, on the Tory has been working with elements of KG's production crew. So lady in the TRAMP, I know you guys are probably seen it coming across their social media litry. Put like the last two years have been working with lady in the TRAMP or new music. I'm Adrian. I'm not sure how much she's doing. I know she's married to the Evangelical guys, so she's probably more in the Gospel space. But you know, it's all good. So Hey, if ever they get together and in fever they want to rock out, they know this is what norty does. Three, three, three hundred and sixty five. Oh yeah, music, music is life and like and like Queen Latifa said, and Naughty Music is love. Exactly, exactly. Next question and it ties in with kg and you tell us a little bit about slug of music and what we can expect? Right. So slugger music is a new venture that kg and I spear had it. It actually came about because I really launched our own online shopping two thousand and seventeen and there was an artist side of Russia as a matter of fact, this is how you, you know, colude in a positive way. But there was an artist out of Russia who had a character named plushy gangster. So plushy Yangster was dressed in a naughty by nature Hoodie and when, you know, we saw that, I reached out to the guy was like wow, that character is kind of hot, but we need our own character. So I worked with him and we came up with slugger, the way you see him now. Slug I had a naughty by nature hoodie on, but when kg saw it, he was like that's hot...

...and I was like you, but you know what, and at the time, to be honest, we were having a couple of issues with trash. We were like, you know what, we can't really call him a naughty character, so we have to find a creative way to give them a different name. So kg said, you know what, we should call him slugger, like Louisville slugger, because he's holding the back. So I was like when you know what, K that makes sense, but we should call them ltown slug because we're from Illtown, not Louisville, and we could take the Louisville, which is the city and, you know, flip it to Ltown and call this thing illtown slugg. So I was like, and you know what, now we could take and make a management company and record label out of Ltown sluggers form a new group, which eventually evolved into slugg of music. So what we ended up with is slug the mascot. That's, you know, the mascot in the bear, and then kg and I are along with with slugg of the mascot in there and we have a new group. But our group is more in the line of what Djkalick, Calvin Harris marshmallow is doing. That basically djs and producers, and you know, they produce music and collaborate with our artists. So what you have now is in town slug as the artists and group, and we're producing new songs or various artist so we having the Cole Michelle signed to us directly. But then we have a lot of features and you know, we're using this as a platform to explore um exploit, you know, new artists. So we have Ryan Lane, we have fresh cold death, this guy you all the I mean Kyo. We got a ton of new artists that we're featuring so it's illtown slug is featuring all of these artists. We're going to break these records and give...

...them a platform so they don't also, they all sound great. We've heard them. We got him at the station. We're going to start probably, you know, getting them in rotation, I mean Nicole, and they all sound great all the yeah, yeah, and the thing is down. So we're just doubling down on all the music, all the music videos. Will be consistently releasing all of this music during this fall and winter and, you know, once, once it's safe for enough to go back down here and start doing concerts again, will move these artists around, get them in front of people in the club and theater and amphitheater atmosphere and man, just give the people new music from new, fresh, young, hungry artists. Oh yeah, like thinking of that. I cannot wait until we're able to attend a concert again. Yeah, I know, right. It's been kind of crazy, right, very crazy, like I don't know what to do, I have nothing to look forward to. US that coming home from work and going to work right, right, and you feel kind of isolated. Right. So, I mean I'm sure everyone feels the same way as like since this colvid thing and since the mandatory lockdowns and curfews and all of the social distance. And you know, you really appreciate literally two freedoms we have before, just being able to go out there and go shoulder the shoulder would have run when a concert singing. You listen to your favorite songs, man, and you know, we realize now we took all of that for granted. So as soon as it's safe for enough, and I'm sure about the time we get in the two thousand and twenty two, two thousand and twenty three wait for, I'm behind us and what we'll get back to normal, man, and appreciate this live music. That was not a good, good vibe, man, when we just did the mixtape tour. Man. So big shout the Donny Wallburg new kids on the block fort in fighting us into their...

ECO system and I was incredible show. That was one of the biggest tours we've ever done in our now twenty nine year career. At the time it was out twenty eighth year, but next year's our thirty anniversary. So that was one of the biggest tours we have done, but gave us some chance to create this slugger lounge experience and that was a great experience for Ross and the fans. That was best. Like I was like we missed a concert. It's okay, we went to the SLUGGAR lounge. I don't worry about the concert, man. Let's good me me in the slug a lounge, right, right, heype man. But you know, Ben, that makes me think. I had a question in my mind. You know, in the s and the S, you on tour, in the studios, you recording, making the albums, and now our you know, two thousand twenty. That's crazy, right, a forty years ago, right, we're I mean, how do you feel? How's The vibe different touring now, like say, for instance, mixtape tour, and compared to in s and s when you were kicking it on tour and you know, city to city and the thing, the crowds, the people, the VIBE. How's IT different? Well, I think, I think when we were younger, like we came out in one thousand nine hundred and ninety one. As norty by nature, we were twenty one years old. So, you know, we would have just been graduating college had we've been college kids, but we were rocking out in the hiphop ever since the early the mid S, you know, in high school. So when we blew up and came out with OPP and ninety one, it was like we were just young kids running around living out wildest dreams. We didn't realize how lucky and how blessed we were. You Know, we definitely felt appreciative of the fans taken to our music, but it was just really pretty much to pursue the happiness back then. So, you know, we enjoyed ourselves and we had a lot of reckless fun.

But when you fast forward till this day today, we realize that, you know, amongst our peers is a lot of different artists who are out with us back then and not many of them are around today or could pour at a capacity like the mixtape tour or even, I love the S, what we do in ampatheaters, you know. So for Rus, the older we get, the more we realize like wow, we're really blessed to be in this position that, you know, some of our peers who started in the s they have regular nine in the fives now because the career just didn't go to that level. So for us again we're celebrating thirty years next year and it's still be making a full time living off of what we do and the really being high demand at the level we are. It's really a blessing and the older you get, the more you realize like wow, you're really blast, you really lucky. Definitely with talented and we worked hard, but it doesn't have to be this way, you know, and it's still have your health in tact and to still have friendships with your lifelong partners. You know, you really just put it all in perspective and it's a very humbling experience the older you get. So when you hit the stage now, you you can take it in and just and just smile and roll with it, right, like yeah, yeah, that's the end. And we still have fun with it. I mean right right, like when we did the mixtape to it, when nobody hits that stage, man, it's all about business and we there to drill through the crowd and give them super high energy. Another great experience we have was that, you know, this slugger opening set that I was hosting and DJ slugger was there, kg was on the mic and we just had a twenty minute opening set. The just run through S S Classic Pop, Rock, hip hop joints and just blaze through the crowd. So we love doing that, man, and you know that that's a good...

...feeling. The just give people a great time and let them lose that Shit, man. That's what feel. I know all the block heads appreciated. I'm telling you, everybody was it. You can't even explain it. Now you don't saying we love the new kids, love down and everything. But Naughty came out. He said all ready to take it to another level, man, let's do it, get this shit done, get going and and be honest. Man, to Donnie's credit, ever since he called us out for Radio City music, all Donni Wamburg and new kids on the block, you know, they've been fighting to get us on tour with them, and I know it for a fact. You know just Donnie has been fighting, whether it was live nation, whether it was management. A lot of people think that. I'm not sure. I'm not sure about naughty and Donnie literally it told them. I mean that's two thousand and ten, so you really and it hoppen in two thousand and nineteen, so you're really talking nine years, ten years of this guy telling these people like y'all. I'm telling you, you will not be disappointed by bringing and inviting noughty by nature. And the task was the new kids cruise or bout the time we got on that tour. Man from you know, this slugger open and set to the slug a lounge to our performance. You know we've been doing this forever, just like them. So you know we proved our worth, we proved our value, man, and and we deserve to continue to keep rocking out at that Copa Asy man, because really, when you deny those kinds of collaborations, you're only shorten the people. Man, because I know everyone and a grandmother, literal grandmother's that was some of the best times in it live. YEA, no matter who else toured with new kids on the block, the total experience, you connect naughty with new kids sold and the numbers, the numbers do not lie, and the numbers don't lie right. Tag Naughty kids on the block exactly exactly like I, then he knows I've been asking for that...

...tour since Radio City and the crews right exactly, and I finally got that tour now, yeah, aparts and so, yeah, and I think that's the beauty you know dd Donnie Wahlberg. He's been on point with kg and us, you know, since this covid thing. Oh, we did the house party music videos. So that was another great look with boys the men and Jordan sparks and big FREEDA. You know, hey, that could have been a tour how to not been for COVID. We could have ran right on, right on through going. We we've been on point with donny and you know, one of our ultimate goals is that doing naughty kids on the block. HEP. So we want to do an album with new kids and really bring this collaboration home and and blowing out the war the butt. You know. Thank I think there's an upside and a positive side to this whole covid thing because it gives everyone a chance to be home really miss what was going on. And when we go back out there and there, and especially when we're at full capacity, you know you're able to sell out these arenas again, you gotta pull out all stops and come with your heavyweight. So rest the shore. We'll be out there lining up with donny and the new kids and making the snorty kids movement really, really superficial this time. Quarantine. It took everybody back to the drawing board. You know what I mean. So, yeah, at first you sitting at home like on, boy, I'm going to do watch Netflix, this and that. They like. Wait, it's time to get creative. We have to get back to the basics, get creative, back to the drawing board. I mean even I got some equipment now and you know I'm just messing around, trying to spend, make a few this and that, whatever, just because I say we're getting alder. You got to do those things you never did before. Right, Ryantea and Covid is making us realize, like, wait a minute, it's a lot of things I haven't done. So I'm at the House and...

...and I think it's a great thing, even with what you guys are doing now. You know, you're hosting your own podcast and you know you guys, I mean you know the industry. You've been the tons of concerts. You've supported guys like us and tons of artists like us for ages. So it's great that you guys are developing your own platforms and you can reach back out to some of your musical here rolls and have US support what you're doing. So I'm really proud that you guys are doing this and I'm definitely happy to participate. You know, I'm one of your first episode, so big up to you. We do appreciate it. Yep, and we had a few questions from the listeners also. Okay, Karen Alexander and Kelly Morgan want to know who's behind the mask of slugger. See The th here's the thing. Slug is one hundred percent real. Okay, he's not like these little foxx that have wigs and fake bucks and fake boobs. Slug is real. So there's nothing behind that mask. It's all slugger. Remember that look a a real deal. Slug it is slugger. And don't I know he's I know he's got a little fan inside of there, the cooling down. Yeah, he does. Oh, yes, it does. Who Man as his own internal cooling and heating mechanism in that thing. Slugger gets on stage and goes from like one to ten. Yeah, radiantly right. It stays on ten the whole time he's on stage. Absolutely, absolutely, slug is the man. So y'all feel free to hit slug up at ll tewn sluggers and he has his own instagram at slug of the bear. So I'll tell something...

...that people checking for him and we'll get them back online. Man's we got a lot of new music coming out, so it's going to be great. Oh Yes, those slugg of bears came out. I bought them for the nephews, the nieces, the God kids and all this, and their parents looking at him like what I said, no, that's the kids going to love this little thing. Man, that's right. He's taking a babywhere about it. But it's a brilliant's brilliant marking him and it's it's brilliant. The naughty gear, the slug and the slugging music. I mean, the future is and it's done it now, you know. And Donny in management, if you're listening, we need you to team back up with vinny and re release some of those naughty kids on the block shirts. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, we miss those on the sorts, another coveted item and people been waiting for that thing. So, like I said, I think post covid you're going to see a lot of things happen that didn't happen pre covid. So people know, like we can't take this thing for granted, we're not promised tomorrow. So we have something in the people of filling it and we're it's very creative. We need to go for full flag. So I'm sure next time we lock in those naughty kids on the block, tea's will be all the way live, man, all the way nice. So yeah, we were we were going to ask you about the future, but I think we just covered that. There is a future. Oh Yeah, we're gonna, we'RE gonna, we're gonna go after the numbers we put up, after the energy we put up. Man, it's like I would hate to see any other configuration because all the people are going to do is say we want naughty kids. I will, we're going to be there energy. So social media is YEP, social media, I will, I will blast that we want all they kids. So I think you know it's going to be prime late two thousand and twenty one, two thousand and twenty two, two thousand and twenty two, for sure, you know. Yeah, but I'm...

...prepared to sit out all the two thousand and twenty one but at the same time make a lot of music, make a lot of content, put it out there so by the time you know, we start touring again, will be out there with new music and people will be singing some of our new songs like like they were the classics, you know. So that's that's what that's what we want and need some more anthems, like you said. Right. Well, you know that whenever we that's definitely our goal. Something Happen in two thousand and twenty one, you know, definitely in Jersey, New York career, because it's our thirty anniversary. So right, let all all of two thousand and twenty one go by without doing one major e then at least. So least by am. You know, the the earmark or the time stamp on that is September. So you know, next year, thirty years in September. Okay, what we the date and the time that we dropped out first album. So definitely around September two thousand and twenty one, all the way out into the new year, will be going on with the celebration. So maybe one time to get everyone in pocket, get this covid under control and we don't make it happen. For sure. How did House party come about? Yeah, House party came about, because I'm cold that that happened. And then ironically enough, Weeda Wilson and Tom Hanks with a first major celebs diagnose with covid so, you know, she did the whole hip hop Arae, you know, viral thing. And then Donnie called us and was like, Hey, guys, I had this great idea. Since we're all locked in, you know, I have this idea of doing the House party song called House Party. got a great groove and he shared the music with K talked about the elements he wanted on and he said boys, the men was on it already right. So I believe it was new kids,...

...boys the men he called Naughty. And then, once we locked in, Donnie put the gather the rest of the element. So Jordan's parks big FREEDA and man it. Next thing you know, he's like that. The song is done. Now we want everyone to from their homes, record their versus on video on the camera phones, you know. So everyone them on camera phones and we sent in the footage. They edited together and man, we had a virtual house party. So very we're kicking it. Everybody was kicking it to that. Man, I was gonna ask you about the recording process. so that's because everybody had to jump on it so quick it's no time to get every you know. So, yeah, and everyone. You even did it in your home studio or your local studio. So right. Personally, I went over to I went over to Kg's studio, our studio we work out of, and, to be honest, trenches verse, who's righting trenches verse, easily five years old on there. We had just archives of his versus. And when I rock well, we put trench on it first, then I did my verse right and man, we flipped it and we met. Happen, you know, we made it all happen. So it sounded fresh soil and bring. Yeah, definitely, definitely. So we rocked out, man, this is what we do. You know, that's good, because you're looking out for the fans, you know, I mean the people out here this.
